As many of you know, Chateau is a family business and is owned by husband and wife duo Dean and Susan, and managed by their daughter Kate. One key element in curating our shop is that we strive to offer items that appeal to our different demographics— Susan prefers Arts and Crafts era designs, while Kate’s style tends towards modern boho. If we can both agree on an item and see it working with both our aesthetics, we know we’ve hit upon something good!
Our new series, “One Item, Two Ways” will highlight some of these shared favorites and show how we use them individually. First up: antique silver pieces!
Susan has been collecting both sterling and plated silver for nearly a decade, focusing on her favorite patterns from the Aesthetic Era, an artistic movement that rose to prominence in late-19th century Europe, popular with Oscar Wilde et al. Here, a pitcher from her collection serves as a vase for some summer blooms from her garden.
Kate enjoys mixing mismatched silver-plated cutlery with her more modern, graphic porcelain bowls. “I love that I get to reduce consumption and promote environmental sustainability by using antiques. Plus, I love that each piece has a history, and was cared for by people before me.”
