Annual Bulb Sale Fundraiser

Growing Gardens, Growing Community

Chateau is honored to continue our Annual Bulb Sale, a yearly fundraising event to benefit chosen community organizations that do so much for our little village!

This year we are thrilled to announce our support for the Cape Vincent Community Food Pantry! The CVCFP is an asset in our community, whose mission is to “strengthen our community by providing access to nutritious, healthy food and other necessities to residents in need, in a healthy, respectful environment.”

All bulbs are chosen for our micro-climate by Chateau co-owner and avid gardener Susan. All orders must be received by September 1, 2024. You will be contacted as soon as the bulbs arrive from our supplier for pick up in early autumn (date TBA). Thank you for your support of this vital community organization!

Orders have closed for 2024. Thank you for your support!

2024 Selections

In 2023 we raised over $200 for our inaugural recipients, the Cape Vincent Library, with proceeds helping to provide children's and adult's programming. In 2024, our selections are…

Hyacinthus orientalis “Sweet Invitation”
10 bulbs - $15

Known to be deer- and rodent-resistant, hyacinths are much loved by happily bumbling bees and helpful pollinators. The original species, Hyacinthus orientalis, was found in the eastern Mediterranean around 1562, and the sweet scent has filled the air of many gardens, especially since 1850 or so when the Dutch began extensive hybridization. Hyacinthus orientalis yield plump, rigid racemes densely compacted with slightly reflexed, tubular florets, also known as nails, and three to four, upright strappy leaves. Sweet Invitation has long creamiscle-apricot florets that blend to rose-pink. Absolutely lovely. [Bulb size: 16/17 cm. Full to partial sunlight. Bloom time in horticultural zone 5: April. Plant 6" deep and 6" apart. HZ: 4-8. Height: 8" to 12”.]

Double Narcissi “Ice King”
10 bulbs - $15

All Narcissi tolerate a wide range of sunlight from full sun to semi-shade. Narcissi prefer well-draining soil, hate to get wet feet and love to be fed with a 4-10-6 or 5-10-5 granular organic flower bulb fertilizer three times a year. Allow the foliage to thrive and die back naturally without braiding or premature removal. [Bulb size: 14/16 cm. Bloom time in horticultural zone 5: April/May. Plant 6" to 8" deep and 6" apart. Narcissus classification: Royal Horticultural Society Division 4. Height: 14"-16”.]

Allium Sphaerocephalon “The Drumstick Allium”
10 bulbs - $15

Dating back to the 16th century, this terrific naturalizing heirloom has dense, egg-shaped composite flowers that open green and mature to rich crimson-purple. Perched atop wiry, yet strong stems, 1"- to 1 1/2"-wide round composite flowers dance in the breeze as the individual florets open from the top down with shimmery silver-white stamen. Each composite flower becomes more egg-shaped as it matures. Best planted en masse, it is one of the most cost effective of all Allium, perfect for thick drifts in mixed perennial beds, meadows and natural settings. It is rabbit-, rodent- and deer-resistant and much loved by bees, butterflies and helpful pollinators. Allium must be planted outdoors in the fall after the soil has cooled down to around 55°F (normally after two weeks of night time temperatures hovering around 40°F). [Plant 4” deep and 3-4” apart. Bulb size: 6 cm/up. Bloom time in horticultural zone 5: July. Horticultural Zone: 4-9. Height: 24”.]
